Good Night Kiwi

$190.00$1,700.00

Shelton Woolright 2016

Common Name: North Island Brown Kiwi
Taxonomic Classification: Apteryx mantell
Found: Whakapara, Northland, pre 1972

Most common of the 5 endemic species with approximately 25-30,000 birds. Population is declining as chick recruitment is poor, without intervention, due to introduced mammal predation. Stray dogs can have a big impact on local populations. Common in Northland on scrub farm, native and exotic forest habitat. DoC’s Operation Nest Egg removes eggs from wild to be hatched in captivity (Auckland Zoo) then juveniles are released onto nursery islands until they reach near-adult size. Chicks are precocious. Only males incubate the egg, unlike South Island species.
