Old specimen shown eating a grub. The smallest of five kiwi species, once found throughout NZ but now restricted to offshore islands and Zealandia. Almost went extinct if not for a handful of birds that were released onto Kapiti Island in the early 1900’s. They are fiercely territorial, and fight using their legs and sharp claws to kick a rival, often leaving feathers on the ground in the aftermath.
