Common Name: South Island Kokako
Taxonomic Classification: Callaeas cinerea
Found: South Island, 1963

Adult male showing distinctive orange wattles that differentiate it from North Island species. Most likely extinct. None survive in captivity. Kokako are poor fliers and related to saddleback and huia. There is no info on collection of this individual. Predation by introduced mammalian predators most likely cause of decline. There was a probable sighting near Reefton in 2007. Donated to Museum in 1963.
