Found: Waikaremoana, 1935

Smallest of nine species of Moa. Most widespread – found in both islands. Inhabited dense forest lowlands. Most likely hunted by the giant Haast’s eagle within it’s South Island range. Sharper-edged bill than other moa suggests a woody fibrous diet. Commonly eaten by Maori. This specimen found in a cave near Waikaremoana by a former director of the Museum.
