Found: Waikaremoana, 1935

Most abundant in the North Island with limited range in South Island. About the size of a large turkey, but females would have been bigger. A partially mummified specimen containing feathers, flesh and cartilage was found in a Fiordland cave in 1980. The feathers were yellow-brown to white coloured. Otherwise known as the lesser moa. Fossil remains have been discovered from at least 1000 individuals of this species.
