An endemic moth found in the North Island. The female is the largest moth in New Zealand with a wing span up to 150 mm. Three different caterpillar moult stages occur before they pupate into an adult moth. A mature caterpillar can grow to 100 mm long and live up to eight months, or as long as five years. Pupation can take up to 170 days. Adult moths are active at night and do not feed as they have no mouth parts. Adult moths only live for about 48 hours.
