Found: South Island, 1990

Endemic. Nationally endangered. World’s only true mountain parrot – associated with beech forest and alpine zones. Bounty hunting of kea was outlawd in 1971. They are monogamous – forming long-term pair bonds. Highly curious and intelligent. Mainly nest below the tree line, on the ground in natural cavities.
